World Series Champs!

Well, it finally happened! The San Francisco Giants won the World Series. The partying in and around the Bay Area has been relatively non-stop as the team begins their parade through the city today.

My wife and I enjoyed watching my favorite player, Brian Wilson, pitch the last strikeout of the game, clinching it for the Giants. Our neighborhood promptly erupted in shouts of joy and fireworks. We drove to a nearby pub to meet up with friends where along the way everyone honked their horns and came outside as the entire city and environs commenced with the celebrations.

People in the Marina stopped traffic and stood on buses and the cops didn’t even mind. It’s been a heck of a year and a heck of a season, and I’m just glad I was here to see it. And yes, I finally shaved (but not until after we won).

  1. Brian Wilson is not only a Beach Boy, but he plays baseball too?! Amazing! :-D

I read an article that compared sports worship to what war used to be for Americans. The scene you described when the Giants won sounds like America's reaction to the end of WWII! Interesting how the source of our sense of unity and camaraderie has shifted.

  2. I'm happy the Giants won and all, but I still think it would've been even better if Lincecum had come out to pitch the ninth wearing a (fake) thick black Brian Wilson-like beard.

    But maybe that's just me.

Ooh, and my verification word for this comment is very fitting indeed: thicke.

  3. Good point Stacy, I have often noted how sports effects people and I look at it as a peaceful alternative to war:) Think about how cool world peace would be if we decided things with baseball and soccer matches!

And Nate, I couldn't agree more:) I also liked Wilson's suggested phrase for next year..."Fear the Fu Manchu!"
