Home Gardening

It’s that time of year again! Are you ready to start your spring garden? Time to plant tomatoes and lettuce for those summer salads.

Last weekend I started planting my garden, with much needed help in labor from friends. Every year getting the garden going invigorates me, to write, to get outside and go hiking, and just to enjoy watching my plants grow. I love growing food, so my crop this year will include corn, pumpkins, beans, tomatoes, lettuce, strawberries, grapes, and just for kicks a little patch of wheat. You don’t need a big yard to grow enough to feed the family for the summer.

What are you planting in your garden this year? Maybe you have a little window box full of herbs? Or perhaps you just like getting out and enjoying nature’s wildflowers? How’s your spring shaping up?

  1. We have a really nice farmer's stand we stop by...
We tried herbs once. Those died. Not good with plants.

  2. I love gardening - just lack the time at the moment.

And the British weather is totally pants at the moment. We've just had more snow IN APRIL.

I plan to do the herby/veg thing in my pots again this year as long as things pick up!

  4. Oh,yes, gardening is the salt of life. I have some garlic shoots coming up that my son and I planted last fall. It's our first try at growing garlic so I'm very excited. We'll grow kale, green beans, lettuce, spinach and some other things... our garden is fairly small still. Here, it's still a bit too cold to plant.

  6. The weather here is so crazy (there's snow on my lawn right now) that you can't plant anything until after Mother's day, but I look forward to it!

  9. I enjoy gardening...but it can be very frustrating here in CO. Some of our late spring snows can ruin a well laid plan.

  10. Hello Mark...We cannot really garden because there is way too much shade in our yard from gargantuan trees, hundreds of years old.

I do keep some flowers and I'd like to have pots of herbs this summer. I get them from the farmers markets.

Hope your garden is wonderful. Susan

  11. This year we have maybe 10 kinds of heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers, pole beans, zucchini, eggplant, and several kinds of peppers. Wheat will be interesting!

We don't really have a garden. Plants here and there around the house is as close as it gets.
