Borders Going Out of Business Sale

Got Border's bucks? Use them or lose them. Borders is having their going out of sale clearance from this weekend until the end of the month, which means lots of cheap books for you and me.

Normally, I don't like to make a plug for a corporation, but this looks like an opportunity for book buyers everywhere. They're offering 40% off up front for most books and I know I'll definitely try to take advantage of this opportunity this weekend. It's sad to see any bookstore go, but at least there'll be some nice deals for those who get in early.

So what books have you been itching to get? At 40% off, will you double the number of books you usually buy? Aren't you at least a little excited (wink wink)?

  1. I know I've seen them around here, but I don't even know where the closest Borders is... Not to dance on a grave, but perhaps that's telling. :)

  2. Hello Mark:
They do not, like much else, extend to Budapest and so their going will, at least here, pass largely unnoticed. But all of this bodes badly for small, independent bookshops for if companies such as Borders cannot continue, then what hope for the struggling private retailer?

  3. Looks like we were on the same page today on our blogs. I'm hoping to pick up a few deals on hardbacks from my local Borders. :)

  4. There used to be a small Waldenbooks-turned-Borders at the nearest mall, but that one only opened for Christmas shopping. It's too bad it isn't around anymore . . .

  5. Why not dance on a grave? Better than falling apart over one. :)

  6. Ahh, I was at my Borders today. It's not 40% off, it's UP TO 40% off. Most things in the store were only 10%. However, there were lots of good deals to be found :) Very sad they are going out of business. Don't know what I'll do for my book fixes now. Yes, I have a Nook, but there's nothing like holding a new, real book in my hands :)

    Ha!

But then I'd have to find it... and it's really hot down here. :)

  8. Hi Mark,
Thanks for the follow. I appreciate your comment. Hope you keep reading!

  9. Hektor – Yup, Borders has shrunk quite a bit and will now shirk entirely.

Jane/Lance – I figured you probably don't have Borders, but even though big chains are under threat, I have hopes that small bookshops can endure if they are unique and creative enough within their own local communities. Only by doing things differently form the large chains can they hope to endure.

L.G. I guess great minds think alike;)

Eagle – I suppose all things change, but it's tough when a local book-haunt dissapears :(

    Suze – Indeed.

Michelle – Thanks for the clarification. I guess that makes sense and ads always tend to overstate a sale. Nonetheless, it looks like there might still be some deals. Are there any other bookstores around that you can go to?

Stacy – thank YOU. Glad to meet ya:)

  10. I've been a loyal Borders customer for years. It's where I do the bulk of my novel writing, so this news is obviously rather upsetting. I stopped in today and was a tad disappointed to see most books were only 10% off. But, I still bought three (and managed to score a piece of artwork from the cafe from the cafe supervisor). I'm keeping my eye out for the Harry Potter collection. I'd like to buy the complete set, with hopes of one day reading them, but I'd like to see if I can get more of a bargain in a few weeks.

  13. Paul - It's def sad to see them go. And when I went it turned out that most things were only 10-20% off, but oh well (shrug).

Rachna - No prob, I'll get some for you;)

Lynda - Wow! Sounds like you found the real deals:)
