Somebody That I Used To Know

Ever get a great new song stuck in your head? Humming it everywhere you go? And it’s got a cool video to boot?

I know this is probably old news to folks in Australia, New Zealand, and Europe, but in the States this song by singer/songwriter Gotye (featuring Kimbra) is starting to get a lot of airplay. If you don’t know what I’m talking about (or even if you do) check out Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know.” The song is spectacular and although the video starts off a bit odd, trust me it gets a whole lot better.

What songs are buzzing through your head this week (probably Christmas ones I’m guessing)? What are some of your favorite contemporary music artists? And how do you feel songwriting compares and contrasts with other forms of authorship, such as poetry, novels, and plays?

  1. Hello Mark:
You will probably not be at all surprised to know that this is the first time we have come across Gotye who is not, as far as we are aware, known at all in Hungary. We cannot, of course, and do not, speak for the rest of Europe.

  2. I haven't heard that one. For me, with Christmas in less than a week, it's all about Christmas music. I get my fill this time of year, and then I'm done!

  3. Since I'm also a musician, I think songwriting is incredibly complex. Lyrics are easy compared to the notes, the melody, the riffs...

  4. Mesmerized by the teeth...wow. Cool song; heard it for the first time this past week on the radio. But had no idea about the choppers.

  5. Well, right now I'm listening to Nightwish, but I've been listening to my whole library today.

I think the name Goyte sounds familiar, but I know I haven't heard the music until today. It's a lovely melody. There's almost an indie feeling to it.

As for the song, One is the Loneliest Number has been stuck in my head for a week, thanks to one of my blogging followers.

  9. I've had that new Black Keys song, Lonely Boy, stuck in my head all week. It is entirely too catchy. May have to put some Christmas music on to clear the head.

  10. Thanks for posting this Mark. I had not heard this before and I am glad that I am not the only one or I would feel geeky for sure. i have to tell you that it gave me goose bumps, so intense, I felt the pain of old losses intensely. Yikes! I do get songs stuck in my head on occasions but nothing comes to mind now, I frequently make my own silly songs. I would have to think that song writing is closer to poetry and unlike novel...mumford and sons have been my recent listening. BTW, I love the video too, it compliments the music so well....merry christmas, I imagine you have some time off. : )

  12. I haven't heard it before....not sure if I like it just yet...some songs take time to grow on me...I am kinda listening to Adele right now on a friend's reco ...I think songwriting the good kind (by which I mean, the words and melody have a cohesive meaning not just strung together) is as creative and time consuming as any artwork.
    Happy holidays.
